Penrith 54 Stoke 21
Stoke made their longest away journey of the season when they travelled to Penrith.
The home side made a devastating start to the game with four tries in the first twenty five minutes, taking a 26-0 lead. As the game moved into the last ten minutes Stoke managed to hang on to the ball and create some pressure. Jack Gosling was tackled just short of the line and the ball was moved right, catching Penrith offside. A scrum was chosen and a couple of strong carries took the ball close to the line with Jack Jameson being driven over for Stoke’s opening try. Ciaran Shone added the conversion to make the half time score 26-7.
Despite conceding another twenty eight points in the second half Stoke made the opposition work hard. Penrith extended their lead with another try two minutes into the second half. Five minutes later the Penrith inside centre was yellow carded for a high tackle. Stoke managed to put together a number of phases with some strong carries from Jameson, Barry Neal, Bailey, Dodd and Grimshaw. A quick tap penalty put Penrith on the back foot and Tom Scragg was able to find a gap to score close to the posts, Shone added the conversion to make it 33-14. Stoke were finally forcing Penrith to defend but were not clinical enough in attack to convert these opportunities into points. A misplaced pass was fly hacked forward for the hosts to extend their lead to 40-14. Any thought of victory was long gone but Stoke continued to ask questions of the opposition in the search for a try bonus point. A big carry from Jack Barry Neal set up a ruck five metres out, scrum half Will Bailey picked up and darted through a gap in the defence to score a third try, converted by Ciaran Shone, 40-21. Stoke continued to push in the last ten minutes but were turned over at their own attacking line out which enabled Penrith to counter and score close to the posts. Another try for the home side made the final score 54-21.
